Friday Fun: Racing Fun with SuperTuxKart Racer

We finally made it to another Friday so it's time to kick back with a cool free racing game! Tux Racer is a free game based on the Mario Kart concept, but features the Linux mascot Tux instead.

There are a bunch of fun tracks and characters to choose from, and you can play using either single or multi-player modes.

Playing Super TuxKart

Single mode lets you race against 4 other characters to get the best time.

SuperTuxKart allows multiple players (up to 4 at a time) on the split screen and allows multiple screen views. There are power-ups scattered around the track containing weapons and other items you can use against other racers to deter their progress.

If you drive off the track the "angel" tux will rescue you with a magnet so you can start again from where you left off.

SuperTuxKart is open source and runs on any platform (Linux, Mac OS X, XP, Vista, and Windows 7) but we've only personally tested the Windows versions.

Just a shout out from a Linux/Windows user who is happy to see something related to Linux again!

And I always appreciate cross-platform tips and tricks, as I interact with both OSs on a daily basis.

    Great work!

Whenever I try to download this, I download it, but the file format is unspecified. I add a .exe at the end of the file name

and then when I try to run it, I get a message saying:
The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more detail

Does anyone else see the same message?

    Hi,

you most probably downloaded the 0.6.1a patch only (which only is one file to replace the executable in a 0.6.1 package, see note/instructions in the download section). Please download the full windows package, and install it (and the redistributables it ask to install, too). Any other problems, please contact us in our forum.

    Cheers,
    Joerg (STK project leader)

I've got this version on Windows XP and it installed and runs fine, but the Ubuntu or Debian packages aren't out yet. So I'm stuck with version 0.5 on Linux so far (the Linux binary didn't seem to work, or I don't know how to make it work on Kubuntu). Anyway, I've got plenty of good things to say about it on windows, with the skidding and new exciting tracks and plenty else. Love it.

Thanks for your feedback Tim! Has anyone tried this on Mac OS X?

  6. Alex

mysticgeek - is there any other way to download the .exe?

  7. zcat

"sudo apt-get install supertuxkart" ought to work
