Turn Vista Home Premium Into Ultimate - (Part 2) DreamScene

In this installment we are going to look at installing the Vista Ultimate toy DreamScene.  Tired of the static pictures as your desktop?  DreamScene allows you to incorporate video as the desktop image.  This is a default feature of Vista Ultimate, however, with some simple hack files we can achieve the same on Home Premium as well.

**IMPORTANT**  Make sure you have Vista Service Pack 1 installed for this patch to work successfully!

The first thing we need to do is download the 20 MB patch file (works for Vista 32 and 64bit) which you can download from the WinMatrix Forum.  Just click the image below to download the winrar file.

download button image

Installation is extremely easy.  Just extract the compressed file and open the extracted folder.

1

With the file extracted simply run the Install.bat file.

1

Answer the series of text messages that show up in the Command Prompt.

1

Once installation is complete you will need to restart your PC.  The location of DreamScene Video is C:\Windows\Web\Windows DreamScene  This patch comes with one default video.  You can also download tons of them all over the web.  I found some very cool DreamScene videos at dreamscenevideo.net.  The following are the steps involved in turning DreamScene on as your desktop.

Right click an open area on the desktop and choose Properties \ Desktop Background and from here click the drop down box and select Windows DreamScene Content.  Then just double click the DreamScene video you want to display.

1

Installing the patch and downloading a few video's is essentially all there is to it.  You can watch the video below where I demonstrate what DreamScene looks like.  I also launched a few applications while running DreamScene.  Hopefully this helps someone out!

is this a systen resource hog??
cause with Vista the last thing i need is more bloatware……….

  2. 7SeVeN7

also can it be used as an "active desktop" replacement?

  3. mysticgeek

    @ 7SeVeN7:

This will certainly add more demand on your system than a static image. I tested this on a dual core AMD system with 4GB of RAM and the CPU usage went up 8%. Also, keep in mind this only works with Aero enabled … so depending upon your set up … You can always try it out and uninstall it if you don't like the system performance.

  4. Observalibera

Hey there, i installed it and it's slowing my system down a fair bit. You mentioned that i can uninstall dreamscene… Could you show me how?
    Thanks.

  5. mysticgeek

    @ Observalibera:

Just Delete C:\Windows\Web\Windows DreamScene and also go into the System 32 folder and delete the dreamscene.dll file.

So do the different versions of Vista just install Vista Ultimate and then disable features through registry tweaks or what? This is such a simple fix and it looks like it's the official Windows DreamScene dialog. I had 64 bit Vista Ultimate for a little while but some of my more useful apps weren't compatible, and silly me, I lost my install disc, so I went back to Home Premium 32 bit and this was one of the very few features I ACTUALLY missed. Nice tutorial man, how do you find this stuff?

  7. Kevin

This doesn't count as being illegal does it, considering you pay for these extras when you buy ultimate?

  8. bbilko

I can get this to work for video files, but I can't make it use .dream files, any idea why?

  9. Ender

Note that this will NOT allow you to install Deskscapes, and install .dream files.

But the new/upcoming (not sure if it is out yet) Deskscapes 2.0 will allow you to install on non-Ultimate versions.

Yeah, Dreamscene is pitiful without dynamic dreams.

  10. 0zSpitt

i can't get the patch to open

  11. Davin Peterson

You don't need winrar because WinZip now supports .rar files

  12. mysticgeek

    @ Davin:

Thanks for that info. I haven't used Winzip for years and I was not sure if it would open .rar or not.

  13. 0zSpitt

i've opened it with 7zip but it doesn't show up in the desktop back ground drop down

  14. 0zSpitt

"this file cant be used as a background picture" what do i need to do?

  15. mysticgeek

    @ OzSpitt

Remember you need to have Vista SP 1 installed also. Otherwise you may encounter problems.

Also, make sure you downloaded the correct patch from Razorblade:
    http://depositfiles.com/en/files/5773402

The only other thing I can think of is your not using Windows Home Premium. If all else fails either send me a private email or ask all of our wonderful members in the forum!

  16. Davin Peterson

    I got the following error:
The video file format is not supported, or there was an error decoding this video file.

  17. mysticgeek

    @ Davin:

From what I have researched the only supported DreamScene formats are:

    MPG 1 , 2 and WMV

When I first emulated this on my system I tried an AVI and also got a similar error. There are plenty of media converters you can use but keep in mind they may not work.

If anyone else has had success with other video file extensions please let us know!

  18. Sean

Installed with directions and restarted but no option to choose. 1st, right clicking doesn't give me a choice for Properties. I can choose Personalize and then Desktop Background. But after that I only get options for Picture Location. The drop down gives choices for wallpapers and pictures but nothing for DreamScene. I even Browsed to the folder with the scenes but they could not be chosen. There is a option (but grayed out) when I right click on the desktop above Personalize for "Play DreamScene" but as I said it cant be chosen. I do have UltraMon running, would that matter? I am current on all updates and service packs. thx

  19. ADOX

i'm in the same boat as Sean

  20. Vic

Same problem as Sean and ADOX are having. Vista SP1 is installed. Help!

  21. Swift

everytime i go to the dreamscene video selector it says rundll32.exe has encountered a problem…….

  22. Candace

Ok…had the same problem as Sean and ADOX. Here is what I did to get it running. You have to right-click on the .bat file and choose to run as administrator, do the question thing, then re-boot. That worked for me and everything is great now!!
Thank you so much for this!!!

  23. daniel damon

add me to yahoo daniel_damon if you need help getting dreamscene to work.. i got vista premium and it works great.. i don't know about home basic though because i don't have that.. but i will try to help you out.. thank.. peace

  24. didi

works, found some nice dreamscenes to use (free, WMV format) on http://www.dreamscene.org ;)

  25. cjthespy

thx man..installed no problem on 64 bit vista premium..working so far..cant wait to convert some of my movies to set as background….

  26. createmo

Thank you for your site :-)
I made on photoshop backgrounds for myspace or youtube and more
    my backgrounds:http://tinyurl.com/5fmh8q
take care and thank you again!

  27. RiCE

Ive done as its written, and after the final restart if i make a right-click on the desktop theres a gray button called "activate dreamscene" which i cannot choose. When i go to switch my background i cannot choose any video, cuz it let me choose only image formats, and theres no dreamscene option in the drag-drop menu. Any idea what should i do? or maybe someone could upload a patched 64bit themecpl.dll. I know SP1 should handle it, but mine obviously doesnt! :S

  28. Jason

So I did this and ran under administrator but it wont work. There isnt an option for Dreamscene when I right click, not even greyed out, and its also not there in the scroll down box. When I go into Windows/Web whatever. Theres a dreamscene folder with a video with the name "vid1337″ Thats about all I see and I dont know how to get this to work. Any ideas?

  29. Robin

everytime I turn the ocmputer on the scene comes on then shuts down and says windows explorer didn't close properly. What do i need to do? This is a result of loading dreamscenes.

  30. yamil

    hi,
i have an error when i open the Desktop Background and it sais that i need to go back to control panel to start there.

i dont know what to do. please help.

  31. RicardoBathUK

Thanks for this hack, it works great and in fact i can use any video I have on my PC, as i can't copy videos into the DreamScene folder, but I can use the browse to go to my video files I have on my desktop!

  32. steve

Is this only compatible with the .wmv format or both .wmv and .dream?

  33. hmz75

Thanks for your great job!!! - but I had a similar problem just like yamil - Posted o Nov 26,2008.Could you please do me a favor on how to fix the problem???

  37. John

doesn't seem to work in win7. thought that it would since 7 is built on vista.anyone get it to work on win7?

  38. 454

I uninstalled that dreamscene and now I get in the desktop background "failed to load page"
the page is blank.I can't choose anything,no dropdown box, wallpaper nothing just a blank page.

I've searched the internet and I can't find a fix for this..

  39. Mak

How about the patch for non-SP1 users..?
i installed the verson from the link above.. the "Play Dream" interface was added on the Desktop Mouse Right Click.. but there's no Pulldown DreamScene Content in the Personalise Page… how come…?

  40. Thick

@Mak: How come it doesn't work?? What part of the sentence: "**IMPORTANT** Make sure you have Vista Service Pack 1 installed for this patch to work successfully!" do you not understand? You don't have SP1, how do you expect it to work?

  41. quadman77

    Doesn't work on SP2

  42. Alex

Will this work on vista sp2?

  43. Magickninja

I would not recommend installing this. I did, it did not work properly and caused windows explorer to crash whenever you right clicked on a directory in windows explorer. Thankfully after I deleted its registry entries and its files the problem stopped.

  44. Omega1664

I read on another website that once you've installed this and it works alright, you can use other video so long as they are compatible with Windows Media Player and youhave the correct codecs installed. To get Dream Scene to play say an .AVI file just try adding the file extension .WMV to the end of the file, example: dreamvideo.avi change to dreamvideo.avi.wmv then tryto run the video in dream scene.
This is what I've read, I haven't had time to try it yet but if it doesn't work just drop the added file extension off the video file you changed. No harm done. Hope that helps some.

  45. alex

I want to delete "dreamscene.dll" but it wont let me
what should i do. It says it needs permission or something.

  46. Fork MICRO$UCK

Hey thank you for posting this hack thingy…went through alot of stress and money on upgrades that either messed up my puter reg files as well as dreamscenes being visible but not functioning believe it or not. Also with your posting i finally found solution that vista support techs could not give me after SEVEN months and as of last friday tagged my case as "unresolved"and stopped all communication.Thank you and know you are truly my Hero….selene

  47. jie

thnx a lot..run perfectly on vista business..
