Real Player Alternative

I was browsing to a website today that actually required I have Real Player installed.  Real Player?  I definitely would not put that annoying Spyware/resource hog on my PC. Then I remembered I installed a version of QuickTime Lite to view sites that required that, so I figured there would be a cool alternate version of Real Player out there.  Sure enough!  Real Alternative is a great way to bypass installing the whole Real Player pig.  Also, when installing it you can choose to just install what you need.

All I needed was the plug in for Firefox and that is all I installed!  Now I can view the website which requires Real Player.

Thanks for the post about the alternative media players. I'm way past frustrated with playing videos offline & the player automatically connecting online.

But, more of a question than acomment…

The media players frequently update for security issues, i.e. the recent Apple QuickTime update. What are the security issues of the lite / alternative players, if any? Are updates / patches made to makes these programs more secure for users?
