Play Oregon Trail The Way You Remember It

2 I am a sucker for nostalgic computer games.  Oregon Trail was the first computer game I ever played on the Apple IIe system.  With the help of the Enhanced Apple IIe Emulator and some virtual floppy discs we can relive those golden memories on your current PC.  I am playing this on my Windows XP box.  I am not sure if it works with Vista.

The first thing you need to do is download AppleWin 1.14.0  This is a zip file so just go ahead and extract it where you like.  I just put it on my desktop.  Open the folder and double click on the AppleWin.exe icon to launch the emulator.  To start the virtual machine click on the Apple button on the upper right side.

Now the next thing we need to play Oregon Trail is the virtual floppy disks.  You can find them along with tons of other great classic ROMS @ jeff.greenfeld.net

Once you have these downloaded and extracted click on the Master Disk Drive on the left side.  Drag the Oregon Trail Floppy there and double click to load it.

Now Reboot the virtual machine by hitting the Apple button again.  Time to get on the trail!

The following is just some of the screen shots from Oregon Trail.  Here I am setting up the players.

Exploring the rivers along the way.

2

Buying supplies from the store.  Who didn't pick the banker?

This is a very stable emulator.  There are also hundreds of virtual applications out there that you can find and load to relive your legacy computing memories.

Thanks for this - I just posted an article on the effects classic games like The Oregon Trail have had on the development of educational software . Letting my readers know how they can play it on a Mac is helpful.

I LOVE THIS GAME! In mid-game it asked me to insert floppy disk 2… what do you do at this point so you don't lose the first half of the game? Thanks for your help!

  5. Matt

Yeah, how do you flip to disk 2?

  6. michelle

OH my GOD! this was my favorite game! it loaded fine but havent got to the 2nd disk as everyone is saying. thanks@!

  7. michelle

this is how you flip to the 2nd disk - click on the master drive 2 the one under 1 and then go to your virtual floppies and double click on the 2nd disk . it will then go in drive two. after that click on the drive that has a 1/2 on it and then press space bar. there you go

to get to disk 2 you click the button showing both boxes, so the one with the box number 1 that says 1 under it, changes to saying 2 underneath it. then you click that box. then press space bar

Now I need to play Carmen Sandiego!

Has anyone else been able to play this more than once on Vista? The second time I tried to launch the emulator nothing happened (it came up in the taskbar but no window ever opened).

I was so excited about the game I logged off, then logged on as my husband and downloaded everything again so I could play. But now when I try to run it in his profile it doesn't work. Anyone know anything about this?

I once played the Oregon Trail on my Eee PC in the car during a road trip and at the point in the game where we crossed the Kansas River, we were actually crossing the Kansas River in real life. How's that for an interesting coincidence? :P

  20. mysticgeek

    @NEWK:

That is a very cool Oregon Trail story! Nice work.

    @ zombie

press CTRL+ALT+DELETE and it should bring up your task manager window. in the processes tab, identify which process belongs to the emulator and stop that process. try re-opening the emulator. i find that when i try to open a program when it isnt running and the process is, the program will not load. hope this works for you. i played this once as a kid and it was alright for me. it never caught my attention, but i am glad to see that it did for other people.
