Calling All Who Dislike Explorer "Bread crumbs" In Vista
I personally cannot stand the "bread crumb" toolbar Microsoft makes us use as a default. I really wish this was an option to enable or disable. I see a lot of praise for this new feature with people saying "it makes navigation extremely fast" … Am I alone here? Am I the only one who sees no benefit to this? When i am navigating an OS I get there via a straight line .. I have no reason to go back somewhere else along the journey. I am a proponent of shortcuts for frequently used paths. When I want to view the traditional path of a certain location, it actually requires an additional mouse click! How is this more efficient? How does that speed things up?
For instance my buddy online want to take a look at templates in C:\Program Files\HP\Photosmart Essential\Template … well here it is with bread crumbs.
Here it is after clicking the folder and copying it with "Ctrl+C". Then to change that view back to breadcrumb you hit the "Tab" key.
Now, if you hit "Ctrl+C" while the Breadcrumb bar is highlighted and then "Ctrl+V" to paste… it will show C:\Program Files\HP\Photosmart Essential\Template …
I would like to know how many others do not like the "Bread crumb" explorer view. Does anyone know of a third party app that will get rid of this?
Or if you do think this is an enhancement to Windows let us know that too! It's a small gripe but one that annoys me nonetheless.

I like it, cause it is easy to go back to where you came from. what i don't like is that When you click on the "Bread Crumbs" it makes a history in you drop down bar which effects ie 7. I know how to get rid of these entries manually, but is there a way to get rid of this from happening?
I agree with you. The breadcrumbs are pretty worthless. But it doesn't bother me so much. I'm a keyboard shortcut freak and always use the "alt-d" to put the focus into the address bar which causes the breadcrumbs to revert to the old path view. I thought I had seen a registry hack or something that disabled the breadcrumbs a while back but I could be imagining that.
Tim,
I completely agree with the history drop down also. I forgot to write about that in my original post.
As far as deleting those entries automatically… I have not found any options yet. I know there is no inherit setting or configuration you can do to change the "bread crumbs" … I have yet to hear of a third party application which will handle it either .. if anyone discovers one please let us know! Perhaps a bounty is in order … mmmmmm…….
I agree with Mysticgeek. Yes it is only a minor annoyance but it can turn into quite a hassle at one point - mostly after having spent hours and hours every day on the computer.
I usually just click in the address bar which brings up the "old familiar" path and then do my copy. I suppose, in a way, it really doesn't matter since in order to copy the path you have to click the address bar anyway to highlight the path in order to copy it. I think that my brain is still stuck in XP. I just don't understand why Microsoft thought they HAD to change the way the path looks. But, then again, there are a lot of things I don't understand that Microsoft does. Happy computering!
Thank you! I completely agree with you and found this page looking for a way to make the address bar display the file path by default rather than this annoying breadcrumb navigation. Please, someone post here if you figure it out. I liked being able to copy and paste address bar information. I worry that everything in Vista is becoming more MacOS-like and we'll have to click with a mouse to do everything that used to be done, in my view, much more easily with keystrokes and commands.
M Smith You want to read this article from The Geek. A bounty was claimed by creating a program to get rid of the breadcrumb feature.

While we are at it… can somebody remove the back and forward buttons and put an "Up Button"?
Vista explorer is so irritating I had to give up on vista after using it for 6 months.
Bread crumbs. A concept for those who are lost. Before we had the bread and butter, now we are presented with the crumbs.
Before to return all one had to do is to "alt-d" and delete to the previous slash; how complex could that have been. Now, we need to find a utility to combine the crumbs into a slice and treat the slice as a whole.
I tell ya, there are times when moving forward is more like walking uphill in a hurricane as the water falling from the thunderstorms obliterate the path we are trying to follow.
Oh, right, this is the "vista" Microsoft is prompting. What a vista we experience as we are tumbling backwards.
Ciao.
