The Obvious is the Last Thing I check

Last night (past midnight) I was sitting in a chair listening to a "radio" channel on Last.FM and reading a blog post on my Nokia N800 when all of a sudden, the music cut off. I checked my DSL modem's network page to confirm that my Internet connection had died. It is not uncommon for my ISP to cut off my Internet connection for short periods of time when I am doing something bandwidth intensive such as listening to online radio or downloading files from BitTorrent. I can usually wait about five minutes or restart my modem. I did the latter. Unfortunately, this got me nowhere. The "ready" light on my modem was still blinking. I decieded to go ahead and turn in for the night.
This morning I woke up wondering if my Internet connection was back up. I though about in the past when my modem had died. I am on my third DSL modem. I really hoped that this was not the issue. When I finally got up to check, I found to my despair that my modem was still blinking.
I began to try everything that I could think of. I tried refreshing my modem page several times. I reconfigured my Internet connection from my router configuration page. I tried connecting the modem directly into a computer. I checked all of the wires going into the modem (the end at the modem). I couldn't get it to work. I was just about to dial technical support, but I decided to wait a few minutes.
In the time between, I had dropped something under the chair I was sitting in, so I moved it to pick it up. Then I saw the problem. I had a surge protector that also did phone lines, and one of the wires had fallen out. Apparently when the indicator light on my modem is flashing, it can mean the phone line isn't in. I thought it wouldn't be lit at all. I plugged it in and went about my way with the Internet.
Why do I always check the most obvious things last?
