Disable Password Manager in Firefox 1.5

A locked CD.Time to time, concerns have been raised over the security of Firefox’s password manager. While these issues are usually promptly fixed, if you are still using Firefox 1.5 like myself, you may wish to disable the password manager since there will no longer be security updates.

1. Go to the Preferences dialog. This is found at Edit>Preferences on Linux or Tools>Options on Windows.

2. Go to the Privacy tab.

Navigating to the privacy tab in Firefox.

3. Inside the Privacy tab, go to the Passwords section.

4. Uncheck the box for Remember Passwords.

Don’t remember passwords.

5. You can now close out of the settings dialog.

Now you need to remove the passwords that were already saved.

1. Go to Tools>Clear Private Data

2. Select the check box for Saved Passwords. You likely don’t need to select anything else.

Clear saved passwords in Firefox.

3. Click Clear Private Data.

While this may be a drastic measure for some, it may be best in the long run. If you care about security, but cannot keep track of passwords, then your best option may be to upgrade to a maintained web browser.
